Tessa LeBaron

As I was passing one of these galleries, "Tessa's Art Gallery", I noticed someone working in the back. Now, if you know me, you know that I love artists. There's something about a creator...a certain energy.

I found myself one day wandering outside of Negative Space, an amazing gallery and performance venue, located on the second floor in the Asia Town Center in Cleveland. The Asia Town Center is kind of like a mall, with two floors mostly specializing in Asian food and culture. On the second floor there are several art galleries, including Negative Space. As I was passing one of these galleries, "Tessa's Art Gallery", I noticed someone working in the back. Now, if...

Gimmickism

When is it a realistic approach to the creative impulse, and when does it descend into a cheap attempt at attention grabbing?

With the dawn of the internet and the subsequent explosion of social media, art in all its forms is ubiquitous across all social apps today. Every conceivable type of artistic endeavor is accessible, from extremely technical realist paintings and drawings to Basquiat on steroids, to monochromatic minimalism. Where in the past, movements in art sprung up as a natural rebellion toward hidebound artistic norms, (Dada, Impressionism, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, etc.), we now find that any and all expressions are displayed...

Extraordinaire Photos: A Visit With Some Extraordina...

This is part two of a blog series relating to the 78th Street Studios in Cleveland. It's a repurposed warehouse building, home to dozens of art studios and galleries. They have a "Third Friday" open house every month, and if you live in the area, or are visiting, you should go. It's a labyrinth of art, food and music. As an artist, the art available there is consistently stunning.
There has been an upsurge in interest in art lately. Both locally and nationwide; more and more galleries are opening, there are more opportunities for shows and exhibitions, and people in general have shown more interest in art then ever before. I'm convinced that the reason for this is twofold: For one, the Covid lock down brought more people to introspective activities than previously. All that time with nowhere to go and a computer led many to explore the things...

A Deeper Look at Hedge Gallery and Artist Mark Howard

I feel that Cleveland is on the cusp of a renaissance. Meeting Hilary and Mark was a singular privilege. I wish them well. They represent the courage, commitment and love for art and the artist that fuels the creative spirit.
I love artists. I say that a lot. There is simply no other occupation like it in the world.  Peter Tompkins, a local Northeast Ohio artist, videographer and photographer, in a documentary he produced called "The Artist", put it best: where would we be without it? I mean look around. Art is everywhere. It brightens and enlivens our world. I can guarantee you that wherever you are right now, you are surrounded by art. If you were to count how...

Hedge Gallery and Mark Howard

There were two reasons I visited these studios on the "Third Friday Art Walk", which draws a large crowd of people to view and buy local art. One was to connect with some artists that were showing there, (I bought some), just to shoot the breeze and appreciate each other. The other was a show being presented at Hedge Gallery there-the work of Mark Howard.
In case you didn't know, I live near Cleveland, Ohio. I've been a working artist for over 40 years, but a full-time artist the last two. One of the things I've noticed lately is how art is really exploding in Northeast Ohio. This was brought home to me when I visited the West 78th Studios on the near west side of Cleveland, and was able to appreciate the work of scores of area artists. I love artists. I never feel...

Quality

When art jurors or art critics reflect on what they look for in a particular piece, they usually say that the first thing they look for is quality. Well, what exactly does that mean, as it relates to works of art?
When art jurors or art critics reflect on what they look for in a particular piece, they usually say that the first thing they look for is quality. Well, what exactly does that mean, as it relates to works of art? I recently had a drawing of mine accepted into the Zanesville Museum of Art annual show. After I dropped off my piece, ("The Hair of Athena"), I wandered through the museum to check out what wonders they had on...

Some Reflections

At this writing it is June 15th, 2023. I find myself reviewing the events that have occurred since launching "Gregory Alan Art, LLC". As I have many times, I also find myself trying to define what "success" means for the artist.
At this writing it is June 15th, 2023. I find myself reviewing the events that have occurred since launching "Gregory Alan Art, LLC". As I have many times, I also find myself trying to define what "success" means for the artist. Well then, let's do a breakdown. A few days ago I traveled to the Zanesville Museum of Art to deliver my drawing, "The Hair of Athena", pictured (a print of it is available here wink wink), which has been...

The Weird World of the Artist

Every now and then, most artists arrive at a crossroads. Some more often than others. It usually involves thoughts along the lines of "Why do I do this?" I mean really, it's a good question. Sooner or later, we arrive at the conclusion that we do this because we love it. But, is that really the reason? Or just part of it?

Sooner or later, we arrive at the conclusion that we do this because we love it. But, is that really the reason? Or just part of it? What purpose do artists fulfill? In my case, as in many artists that prefer to take chances at...

My First Solo Show

Nearing retirement in 2021, I decided, along with my son and business partner AJ, to not only create, but actually share my art with the world. I was finally able to show what amounts to an exploration of my inner self. Not an easy decision. But I was ready. What the hell, why not?
I'm having the time of my life. At the tender age of 68, I am a full time working artist. Those of you who know me and are familiar with my work may be saying, "It's about time!", but I'm here to tell you that it could not have happened before now. For many reasons that are too numerous to mention here, I just wasn't ready. I had to grow up. I had to shed several skins over the years,...

Art as Love

I was recently interviewed on a podcast called "Cleveland Schwill", a local Cleveland source for all things artistic and interesting in this city. During my conversation with Dave and Jason, I mentioned that I believe art is love. Now what the hell do I mean by that?

During my conversation with Dave and Jason, I mentioned that I believe art is love. Now what the hell do I mean by that? The times we find ourselves in lately are especially nutty, it seems, and believe me, I should know, being sixty eight years of age. I've witnessed a few things. I can't recall ever...

Connecting

I don't create art to make money. In a perfect world, (at least MY world), my work would generate skads of moola, while at the same time allowing me to do precisely what I want to do. But this ain't a perfect world, so given a choice, I'll take the latter.

But this ain't a perfect world, so given a choice, I'll take the latter. There's something about the creative process that's hard to describe, especially if you're not the creative type. It can best be described as a sort of food for the...

Why I Create Today

When I was a child, I used to love to doodle. I loved it so much that it became a sort of obsession, so much so that the ability to draw sort of grew in me. It wasn't that big a deal though, until other kids in school would marvel at my ability. I was better at art than anybody in my class, and I began to realize that it was this that would define me.
